Gather Materials:
Freestanding lace designs have been specially digitized for water-soluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful embroidery remains.
There are a couple different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene. Vilene is used in this demonstration.
Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle as it has a finer point than an embroidery needle and it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer.
As the freestanding lace will be seen from both sides, wind bobbins with the same thread colors that are being used in the top needle.
Hoop the water-soluble stabilizer tightly. Make sure it is taught with no wrinkles.
Attach the hoop to the machine, and load file "a". Embroider the first piece using a matching bobbin for every thread color.
After embroidering, trim away the excess stabilizer.
The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Vilene, soak the embroidered lace for a few minutes.
Allow the lace to air dry, and then press it with a pressing cloth on top.
Repeat the steps above to embroider the rest of the lace pieces.
To begin assembly, lay both of the pieces on the table with the right sides facing up. Line them up so the triangles with 12 and 15 are touching and the corners are matched up.
12 should be on the left and 15 should be on the right.
Pin the edges of triangle 12 and triangle 15 together.
Hand sewing the pieces together works best for this project. A whip stitch looks nice and works well.
Hand sew the pinned edges of triangle 12 and triangle 15 together using thread matching the borders of the embroidery.
Line up and pin the edges of triangle 14 and triangle 4 together. This will make the piece start to take a 3D shape. Then hand sew them side by side.
Line up, pin, and hand sew the edges of triangle 19 and triangle 3 together the same way on the opposite piece.
Locate triangle 10 and triangle 12 next. Line up the edges and pin 10 and 12 together.
Then sew triangle 10 and triangle 12 together.
Line up and pin the edges of triangle 10 and triangle 8 together. Hand sew them side by side.
Line up and pin triangle 8 onto triangle 16. Hand sew them side by side.
Line up, pin, and hand sew the edges of triangle 16 and triangle 6 together.
Following the opening along the center of the die, continue to line up, pin and sew the rest of the remaining triangles together.
The last triangles to line up, pin, and sew together should be triangle 5 and 15.
To turn the lace die into an ornament, cut a piece of thin ribbon to 7in long. Thread the ribbon through the ornament using a large sewing needle and tie it into a loop.
Decorate your home with a collection of dice in different, fun colors or create a beautiful die to give as a charming gift to your friends and family.
