Drift away with this delicate freestanding lace creation! This tiny two-colored parasol is the perfect addition to potted plants, fancy drinks, or for a simple touch of whimsy to your home. These simple instructions will show you how!
Supplies
To craft your freestanding lace parasol, you will need:
- Petite Parasol (Lace) embroidery design
- Heavy duty water-soluble stabilizer, such as Vilene or Sulky Ultra Solvy
- 100% cotton thread (30-50 wt.) in your choice of 1 or 2 colors
- Hand sewing needle
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Scissors
- Thin wooden dowel, pipe cleaner, or wire for umbrella handle
Designs Used
Begin by stitching the four pieces of freestanding lace onto heavy duty water-soluble stabilizer using 30-50 wt. cotton thread for best results.
Once you're done stitching, rinse and dry each piece completely. (Here's more on stitching freestanding lace).
Next, use either a hot glue gun or a hand sewing needle to adhere the four panels together.
Continue connecting the pieces, one by one, all the way around the structure.
Next, carefully run a line of glue down the back center of every other panel along the parasol. This will help create a wave dimension in the finished piece.
Gently push or pinch together the glued seam to set a permanent fold in the lace.
When you are finished gluing, the end result should look like this.
Next, cut your wooden dowel, pipe cleaner, or wire to your desired handle length.
We used a tiny wood saw to shorten a wooden dowel to 4.5" in length.
Add flair to your umbrella handle with the help of a permanent marker, using a piece of masking tape to create a straight edge.
A decorative push pin can help secure your handle in place and add a little extra something to your finished parasol.
Secure your handle in place using hot glue on the inside of the parasol and set to dry.
You're ready to drift away into spring and summer with a beautiful freestanding lace creation!
